What to look for after hail, how to document it, and when to call for an inspection.

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

Short answer: Look from the ground for dented gutters, downspouts, vents and AC fins, granules collecting at downspouts, and missing or cracked shingles. Many roof hail marks are only visible up close, so a professional inspection is the reliable way to know.

Start on the ground

Never climb a roof after a storm. Walk the property and check metal surfaces (gutters, vents, mailbox, AC unit). Dents there suggest the roof was hit too.

Document with dates

Photograph damage and note the storm date. Save local weather alerts or news reports that mention hail in your area.

Know your policy terms

Check whether your wind/hail deductible is a flat amount or a percentage of dwelling coverage, and how long you have to report a claim. Policies vary widely.

Get it inspected

A qualified roofer can check for bruised shingles, cracked mats and damaged flashing. Ask for photos of anything they find.
