What to Do After Hail Damage: A Step-by-Step Checklist

A practical checklist for homeowners after a hailstorm, from safety and documentation to inspections and filing a claim.
Put safety first
Stay off the roof. Look for broken windows, hanging gutters or exposed areas, and keep people away from damaged sections.
Document the damage
Take date-stamped photos of dents on gutters, downspouts, siding, vehicles, outdoor AC units and any visible roof damage. Note the storm date.
Prevent further damage
If water is getting in, use buckets and tarps where safe. Keep receipts — reasonable temporary repairs are often expected by insurers.
Read your policy
Check your deductible (many policies use a percentage deductible for wind/hail), filing deadlines, and whether your roof is covered at replacement cost or actual cash value.
Get a professional inspection
A qualified roofer can identify hail damage that's not visible from the ground. Verify license (where required), insurance, and local address.
File and track the claim
Report the claim to your insurer, get a claim number, and keep a log of every call, email and visit.
Watch for storm-chaser red flags
Be cautious of high-pressure door-to-door offers, requests for large upfront payments, or anyone offering to 'cover' your deductible — that's illegal in many states.
